Give to God What Belongs to God

Christ challenges us in St. Matthew’s Gospel, after being confronted with a coin bearing Caesar’s image, to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. God, however, created humanity in his image. The coin may bear Caesar’s image, but Caesar bears God’s image. Even that which seems to belong to Caesar actually belongs to God, because Caesar belongs to God. This where we encounter Christ’s challenge: each of us bears God’s image and belong to him. Everything we do in this life should keep this in mind. Our politics, our interactions with others, our family life, it all must keep in mind that God must be glorified, and our brothers and sisters must be lifted up to God and made holy. This is what we must do to bear the image of our loving God into the world.

Thanks,
